The Navamsa (D9) Chart and Marriage

The Navamsa is the ninth divisional chart and the key to marriage and inner strength in Vedic astrology. Learn why astrologers always check it.

The Navamsa, or D9 chart, divides each zodiac sign into nine equal parts of 3°20', producing a secondary chart that astrologers treat as almost equal in importance to the main Kundli. Its primary use is to judge marriage and the spouse, but it also reveals the true strength of each planet and the direction life takes in its second half.

A planet may look strong in the birth chart but fall into a weak position in the Navamsa, and vice versa. When a planet occupies the same sign in both charts, it is called Vargottama and gains great stability. The Navamsa Lagna describes the partner's nature, and the 7th house of the D9 chart is examined for the quality and timing of the union.

Because the Navamsa is so sensitive — its Ascendant shifts every thirteen minutes or so — it is also the best test of birth-time accuracy. If the D9 does not fit the person's life and marriage, the recorded birth time is often slightly off, and rectification may be needed before deeper predictions are attempted.
