Guna Milan: The 36 Points of Kundli Matching

Guna Milan compares two Kundlis across eight factors worth 36 points. Learn what each Koota measures and how to interpret the score.

Guna Milan, also called Ashtakoota matching, is the traditional method of comparing the birth charts of a prospective couple. It examines eight factors (Kootas), each based mainly on the two Moon signs and Nakshatras, and awards up to 36 points in total. Varna (1 point) compares spiritual temperament; Vashya (2) mutual attraction and influence; Tara (3) health and fortune compatibility; Yoni (4) intimacy and instinct.

Graha Maitri (5 points) assesses friendship between the two Moon-sign lords, reflecting mental compatibility. Gana (6) compares temperament — Deva, Manushya, or Rakshasa. Bhakoot (7) looks at the distance between the Moon signs and its effect on prosperity and family. Nadi (8), the heaviest factor, concerns health and progeny; two partners sharing the same Nadi is considered a serious flaw.

A score of 18 or more is traditionally acceptable, 24 and above is good, and 32 or more is excellent. But the total is only the beginning. A Nadi or Bhakoot Dosha can be cancelled by other factors, and any serious astrologer will also compare the 7th houses, Venus, Mars, and the Dashas of both charts before offering an opinion.
