Rahu and Ketu are the points where the Moon's orbit crosses the path of the Sun — the north and south lunar nodes. In Vedic mythology they are the severed head and body of the demon Swarbhanu, who drank the nectar of immortality; the Sun and Moon exposed him, and in revenge the two halves swallow the luminaries during eclipses.
